“They are sick”
We feel pain when we read this text, they hurt their children, they are very insulated, so we see this as bad people.
But we have tattoos, piercings etc, so that’s also painfull but it’s another pain

Actually there is only one valuable lesson in this text. It's not "really" what is written.
You need to read the text and understand the value about it. It’s a lesson!

In short: it is a text that tells people how we study how different cultures describe. We always think stereotyped as mentioned above were in previous challenges.

The evolutionary concept of culture:
- Some cultures are better and more right than others
- Some cultures rank higher than others on a ‘developing ladder’
Western: change the investigation
NOW: the western European People where the cleverest!
- The goal (at least from those on the top of the ladder) must be always to move up the ladder – to become more and more developed towards Western standards.
The relativistic concept of culture:
- All cultures are equel? (in theory but is that in reality also?) door dit te zeggen creëer je problemen. Het is niet zinvol dus om elke cultuur te gaan bekijken als gelijke
- Culture as homogenic islands
- Cultural relativism is the principle that an individual’s human beliefs and activities should be understood by others in terms of that individual’s own culture.
Problems
· Problems with the evolutionary and the relativistic concept of culture are:
Individual differences are ignored
The local context is ignored
The complex concept of culture:
- Culture is not something that you have
- Culture is created among people, when the interact
- culture is the tacit knowledge the meanings and values that we share – but we do not know it beforehand
- everyone in a culture does know share the same values
- culture may not be seen as fx national cultures (homogenic cultures)
- there are always differences within a culture – there can be certain dominating logics
- the cultures are constantly moving, and there will always be negotiations
- we are moving between several different cultures

It’s not the culture but the people that are important in this case.

Why is it important to be aware of and have knowledge about the concept of culture when working as a social worker o teacher
What challenges do you see in the concept culture?
You can’t choose ONE challenge because all the challenges are one together. I mean that they support each other. They are all important
Maybe challenge 2 and 5 because I think they are the most important!?
Is the concept useful when we talk about human differences?
- why?
- Because are world is not for everybody the same Everybody thinks different
- For some people is one fact a culture shock but for a other human it’s very normal to eat dog for example
- how is the concept used within your profession?
